A Practical Chinese Grammar (Mandarin)

I have about six or more Chinese Grammar books. To say that A Practical Chinese Grammar (Mandarin) is the best does not nearly convey just how much better this book is. Way more material, way better explanations, way more examples. For each topic, there are really good explanations of how a point of grammar works, with all the variations for each topic. I have two copies. I keep one in my house and one in my car.And on top of this, the print is easier to read compared to my other books on Chinese grammar, where fonts are smaller and lines are crowded.

This books is a good way to learn Mandarin or refine your skills, especially if you approach language learning from a linguistic and or technical perspective. Even if you learn more being interacting and picking up the technical bits later, this book would be very useful for you at some point.The language and examples are easy to read and understand. The authors seem to take pains to not be obscuring.

I remembered using this book when I took formal Chinese classes, and its really helping to review now that I'm trying to learn Chinese on my own. It does a great job of explaining Chinese sentence construction, I'm finally getting a feeling for Chinese word order and sticking dependent clauses in front of what they are modifying. This book does a much better and more thorough job of explaining grammar than the Practical Chinese Reader which is the standard Chinese instructional text it accompanies. Its also helped me translate some Chinese pop music lyrics, Google Translate is only so-so when it comes to Chinese sentence construction.

I have not gone through the whole book but the author can explain the concepts in simple ways that are easy to understand. Any extraneous material is not included or the reader is simply told to wait until it is covered later. He just sticks to the single point he is trying to convey.

This book exceeded my expectations. The material is presented concisely, clearly, and effectively. I am using this as a supplement to Rosetta Stone and found this to be ESSENTIAL.

This book breaks down the rules so that they make sense to someone like me who has to know the "why" behind a speech pattern.

The textbook arrived in great condition and it is overall pretty good at teaching lessons. The only issue is that I feel like it goes a little too fast and introduces very complex grammar points that a complete beginner might not fully understand. I like the textbook, though, and appreciate the pinyin provided with all the sentences just in case I don't know how to read a certain character.

This book is simply essential if you are trying to learn Mandarin. It might come as little out of times but that is irrelevant; this is the best textbook of Chinese Mandarin language that I have found so far in the bookstores of New York City, Shanghai, and Beijing. I so wish someone would update it a little (modern words, moderns phrases) and issue it as an e-book. It would beat hands down everything else in the world market.

This essential to have good material to learn a language. This is an essential book.
