Water Filters = Printer Cartridge / Toner Situation?
I read all the threads below before I made my Sentinel purchase of this filter (for less than ½ the cost of GE Direct). I'm no scientist nor water purity expert, but my guess is that both filters have carbon/charcoal core that are similar and filter the water similarly. To remind me to purchase a filter for my GE Fridge, I got a mailer via U.S. Mail from GE that offers "Water Filter Savings Direct from GE" with a special discount CODE. I called the 800#. After the "discount" the pricing is about the same as here on Amazon btw.... (They did offer free shipping; I have Amazon Prime which provided for free shipping). For the above promotion, GE sent me a color 1-page brochure with the "Water Filter Savings" special. A color 1-pager isn't cheap to produce and mass mail. Also, the associated 1-800# staffed by contact center agents adds a bit more cost. It's very unlikely that GE would have a Direct Mail campaign for a water filter if there wasn't a a high profit (over priced) item. What I think we have is that the GE Filter is the equivalent of buying Printer Toner or Printer Cartridges at very high price markup from the printer manufacturers. GE wouldn't be able to derive strong ROI from their direct marketing if the water filter wasn't a very high margin product. My guess is Sentinel is providing a like product at lower cost. (And btw, I'm a marketing guy in Atlanta, never heard of Sentinel before my purchase, not affiliated in any way)

The reviews with low flow ARE A MYTH
I know that OEM parts are almost always better and was very hesitant to get a non-GE MWF filter. I knew I had Amazon's return policy so I forged forward into the unknown. I turned off the water before changing my filter but when I pulled it I heard what sounded like an actuator. I think this was the fridge turning off a water valve because when I SLOWLY turned the water back on WITHOUT A FILTER no water came shooting out of the fridge. I think you can change these filters without turning off the water.Changing was as simple as a counterclockwise twist to remove, and a clockwise twist to put the new filter on. I was EXTREMELY WORRIED about flow as other reviewers had stated. I did a flow test on the old MWF filter and the new filter as follows.OEM GE MWF Filter: 4 cups in 31.96 secondsNew WaterSentinel Filter: 4 cups in 31.27 secondsThese both equate to about 0.5 GPM (Gallons per minute)The water tasted exactly the same and the flow rate was the same if not better. YOU HAVE THE AMAZON GUARENTEE! Buy the filters and if they are terrible return them! For me they are awesome and I am saving a ton of greenbacks. 11/10 with rice!

Read the instructions
It appears that many of the problems that motivate people to post negative feedback are related to incorrect installation. All of the common mistakes are covered in the instructions, so they are easily avoided. The number one thing is to be sure you do not tilt the filter after you remove the plug, or the critical o-ring may fall out and get lost. It will leak without the o-ring. The second thing is when you line up the start arrows and push the filter into position, make sure you give it a good firm push so that it is fully seated. You may initially get a slow flow. That should resolve itself after 1-2 gallons pass through the system. If it does not, simply remove the filter and re-install it. Run some more water through, and it should flow just fine. This is a good product; made in the USA. I am simply not going to pay forty some dollars for a GE filter when my public water is already safe to drink and my needs are to improve the taste. This one works fine.

Instillation a little weird
I bought this filter for my GE Refrigerator. I first installed the filter and after a series of "a loud racheting noise", no water would come out. I took it out and tried and tried again. Always the same loud racheting noise and no water. Tried it without the o-ring... Water everywhere. Gave up and put the old filter back in. No problem. I tried the next day with no luck again. Same results as the day before. Third day I started looking for how to return it and started reading reviews closely. I came across several posts stating to turn it more than it says to, or until it won't turn anymore(this might take a little extra force). I give it a whirl and sure enough it turned more than I thought it would..about a 1/4 more than I was turning it before. It works fine. No leaking, and no problems. The o-ring might be a little big making it need a little more twist to seat it, but once its set your in business. Water doesn't have a funny taste and hopefully it holds up. Hope this helps if your having issues installing it.

Good Product
Works good. So far, it seems to as good a job as the GE brand. Will be excellent if it meets or exceeds the interval that the OE one does.
