Dinosaur Jr.

Bulbs of Passion!
This is it...the first Dinosaur release all reissued even with one or two bonus track(s). I don't really know because I've never seen the original version of this album. "Bulbs of Passion" is a rare song that wasn't on the original album, but I also think the "Does it Float"(live version) is a bonus track too. This really is a treat to have on CD, though it isn't as good as YLAOM...it really is an original effort with interesting guitar tricks fom J and interesting genre mixing in all of the songs. It's almost folk in some songs, there's metal riffs, some screaming, weird psychadelic tricks, hints of new-wave and use of casios(though where it is found is unknown). The best songs= "Forget the Swan", the heavy and interesting "The Leper", the folky "Cats in the Bowl", the single "Repulsion", the metal driven and quite humorous "Mountain Man", and "Does it Float".This took me a few weeks to really like, but when it came to me. It really was excellent and I realized "Dinosaur" is really unique and a really creative effort. Almost five stars.

Wonderful band
Always nice to throw away this awful cassette and to listen to the cd-quality. It brought back my youth. I love you Jay...

Ragged Glory!
Great album. Its great to hear the band in its infancy. You can really see the progress they made once you listen to their second record.

Where the Indie Legends Got Their Start
This is where it all began, where J, Lou, and Murph started what J liked to call "ear-bleeding country." Markedly more on the folk-rock side than their later albums, there are still heavy overtones of the time J and Lou spent in the hardcore punk band Deep Wound. This album was originally released on Homestead Records, the independent record label started by J's college friend Gerard Cosloy, based on a promise that, if J recorded an album, Homestead would release it. Ten songs, $500, and a home studio in the woods of Northampton later, and Dinosaur Jr. (then known only as Dinosaur) released their self-titled debut in 1985.Why do I mention ten songs? Well, the original release of the album didn't contain thew Merge-reissue opener of "Bulbs of Passion"; that was orignally released as the b-side of the "Repulsion" single by Homestead. At J's request, Merge used it to open their reissue as J felt that song is what sparked the band's sound. The Merge reissue also includes a live performance of album track "Does It Float" from 1985 to close the album.Whereas the band would often blend their various musical inspirations into each song, their debut album is different in that each song is stylistically different from the rest. The one common thread from this album that held throughout is the intense volume and distortion, which is one of the band's biggest trademarks. My personal favorite tracks from this album are "Cats in a Bowl," "The Leper," the studio version of "Does It Float," "Severed Lips," and "Mountain Man." The inclusion of the live recording of "Does It Float" was a bold move for Merge as I feel it takes away from the overall quality of the album. Aside from the guitar, the sound quality is poor, and either J or Lou (Lou did the majority of the vocals on this album as opposed to J on all subsequent albums) does little more than scream and yowl throughout the performance. If you want a better live recording of the band's early years, get Chocomel Daze (Live 1987), which has an excellent blend of songs from their first two records.

Eclectic, interesting, raw, and not nearly as embryonic as history has treated it.
The debut offering from Dinosaur Jr (then called simply "Dinosaur") is generally perceived to be an unfocused affair, albeit one which exhibits plenty of potential and includes some genuinely great material in its own right. I tend to agree. The three-piece were very young when they cut this, and it shows in the slightly apprehensive vocal delivery (from both J and Lou) and the muddled production - they seem unsure just what instrument should lead the charge, despite some decent guitar work signalling the future and displaying the talent of the now iconic Mr Mascis.Despite this, it includes several classic Dinosaur tunes and live favourites and seems to prove that Mascis' songwriting skill arrived fully-formed, if not his instrumental performance. "Repulsion", "Severed Lips" and the brooding "Quest" (with the personality-defining chorus of "Why won't you be my friend?") are all brilliant songs despite the sonic shortcomings of the recording. Other highlights sound more like Lou's contributions, or group efforts at the very least, and "Forget The Swan" comes off as possibly the best track on the record. It's certainly one of the most effective songs in their post-reunion live set, and is usually played with just the confidence and aggression the studio version lacks. Lou's influence can also be heard on "Gargoyle" and "Mountain Man" - both successes, exemplifying the clash of influences in Dinosaur Jr's genetic make-up: hardcore punk's aggressive catchiness, the pure noise of Hendrix-esque wild soloing, and more than a dash of post-punk's angular restraint. They would do better on their next two releases, both undeniable classics, but "Dinosaur" itself is one of their more interesting records because it still feels like the band that recorded it could go in any number of directions next time out, even though by now we (the fans) know "You're Living All Over Me" inside out. Also: this remaster includes "Bulbs Of Passion", which is still a Dinosaur Jr live staple to this day, making it a must buy.

Me like...
Not their best release but still Dinosaur Jr, raw and powerful. J Mascis still had yet to find his vocal comfort zone. Me like.
