8bitcade project for my HS Physics Electricity Unit
I am a physics teacher at Oakland International High School. Decided to give this project a try with my students~ my students were thoroughly engaged and eager to complete the project. I teach students who are new to English language, and it is often difficult to find topics or projects that they can fully immerse themselves in. That being said, they were super excited to learn about and work on the 8BitCADE console. We had an instructor come into our classroom and walk through the build with the students. They learned about electronics, how components work, soldering, basic programming, and much more! The challenge with electronics and hardware projects is that developing a project is extremely difficult. Sourcing components, engineering a build, and project design as a whole is so time consuming and expensive. It is super easy to just use 8bitcade since everything is already prepared and sourced. We do have concerns about the safety of a soldering iron, but we have never had an issue with it. As long as you have a safety briefing with your classroom beforehand, the soldering iron is never really an issue. My students actually enjoyed the challenge of working with something more technical and challenging. My classes had a great time, and I look forward to pursuing this project again with my students this year.

Great to assemble with my godson!
My little godson recently hit his 9th birthday and has been getting into electronics, like his father. I thought this would be a great item to assemble together with him and I was right! He loved the project from start to finish and is still playing with it. I can't really comment on the coding aspect since we did the soldering and assembly part together, but he really loves it so far. Recommend if you have a child who is interested in the subject matter.

Fun challenge
This was a fun challenge for a beginner like myself to learn proper soldering. The kit is geared towards folks who at least have an intermediate understanding of soldering, so if it's your very first time, you might struggle a bit like I did. But I learned a lot!

Great DIY kit, but may be too hard for the starting DIY solderer.
This kit is a great idea. For someone who wants to do a little project, it is just perfect. You'll need patience and will have to go slow. As well, make sure you have a soldering iron (not a soldering gun). Also, if you are looking just for a retro handheld, there are better ones out there. This is really for someone looking to say, "I made this handheld".All-in-all, the kit is complete and the parts are decent. Add a few extra spots of solder on the exposed ports to give them added stability and this will be a great handheld that you made yourself.

Awesome DIY Project
Was wanting to learn to solder and code, came across this device and thought I would give it a try. I have soldered once before with no experience so assembling this will hopefully give me a better understanding on how it works.Takes patience to put together but a fun project.

Disappointing start
I got this to use with a school coding/electronics club. Foolishly, I assumed the kit would have everything we needed to get started. However, it requires soldering, and we didn't have a soldering tool, so we have since purchased one and will give it a try later this semester. I'll update my review then.Just a word of warning that users should not purchase this unless they are prepare with a soldering tool and a good, safe space to work on it. This is not an all-inclusive kit.

Great kit for anyone to learn on
The 8BitCADE Original DIY Handheld Game Console is a great starting kit for anyone young or old looking to learn how to solder. It offers an engaging experience of building your own retro game console while learning the basics of soldering and coding. It's important to note that the kit doesn't come with any soldering equipment, so you'll need to purchase everything beforehand. However, the assembly is straightforward, and the instructions are easy to follow.Overall, the 8BitCADE Original DIY Handheld Game Console is an excellent option for those interested in learning soldering and coding. It's an enjoyable and rewarding experience that will provide a sense of accomplishment once completed.

Enjoy the build
I'm pretty adapt at constructing retro gaming machines, having had lots of raspberry pi's, odroid and other single board computers along with several purpose built arcade machine cabinets and virtual pinball machines. So why bother with this?Well this is a complete fiddly build using an Arduino based board, which is something i have never tried and my eyes aren't what they used to be, so i have added my backlit stabilised magnifier to my toolkit and this was a good test for both that and it.Arrived in a box suitable for gifting, along with the included bagged contents.Rather like any model kit, make sure you have everything beforehand and commencing construction.ConclusionBuild was relatively easy to complete, as expected i required my backlit magnifier as my eyes ain't what they used to be, so bear that in mind if you're progressing in years.Tutorials were decent with simple easy to follow step by step instructions, i didn't bother with the video tutorials for the build, just grabbed the .pdf.Games are simple enough to download and install on the connected device, though are obviously a little basic, but remember you bought this for the build with the prospect of some ongoing gaming being a bonus.More advanced retro gaming options can be found elsewhere for a similar price, but this is aimed squarely at the fun of the build and it's hardware. If you like to ongoing tinker with emulation and software and ain't too bothered about constructing the hardware first, a pi or odroid is probably a better option.Recommended as a project for the younger enthusiast

A good winter project to do on these dark nights
I am looking forward to completing this but it is very time consuming because a lot of care and attention is needed. When the item arrived it threw me a bit because the box is very small considering it's £45+ price tag, it had no contents list or instructions but on the box is a website link that takes you to a tutorial and help guide. Now unless you have access to an electronics tool kit including soldering iron you are going to need to purchase one at between £16 - £30. So it can make this purchase quite expensive considering that the end product will be a very basic 8 bit retro games console with a couple of hundred basic games. Consoles with retro games sell for half this price but it's not really about that, it's about the enjoyment of actually building your own handset and coding it and hopefully getting a fully working console at the end of it.That is why I wanted to give it a go, I know the games are going to be basic and the kids and grand kids will look at it and laugh at the game graphic quality but sometimes it's about remembering where it all started and enjoying the blast from the past. So I am going to persevere and smile at the memories.

Easy once you get started
I very much enjoyed building this game,It took me (being a complete novice to electronics) around 3 hours to make.I am not sure if I was meant to of received any form of instruction in the box but I found nothing so I went on the company website and found a walk through online. This is well detailed but I feel it could be a little clearer to help make it a smooth build.I still managed to do it and it turned on when I plugged it in!I would say it’s great for a complete novice the only limitations in my opinion is how old does a child have to be to use a soldering iron. You should use in a well ventilated area as solder fumes are not great to breathe in.I think the price is maybe a tad on the high side but I’m not very experienced in paying for electronic gaming equipment.Overall this is some good fun helping you learn a little electronics and coding.I hope this review helps you with your purchase.

Comprehensive selfbuild console
If you are looking for that gift for yourself or someone who is a bit techy this self build console will really bring a smile. Well thought out it is alot better than onenof those straight from the box 8bit consoles. The satisfaction that you builtnthis yourself gives the device an added layer of character. Not easy and time consuming but the satisfaction is priceless.
