Outstanding new book on trees
This is a beautifully produced book, with exquisite drawings and elegant typography (drawing on John Evelyn's original). My only qualification is that the writing, while well expressed and informative, is slightly arch. It affects a formality that comes across as lacking passion, or depth of feeling, for the subject. Writing about the introduction of potentially deadly ash disease, for example, the style is rather matter-of-fact. For great writing about trees, Hugh Johnson is still the master, followed by Oliver Packham (what a great recent little book on the ash!) and the late Alan Mitchell. Nevertheless, the New Sylva is a triumph for the publisher in every way.

A book to take time over
The drawings are wonderful and information is very interesting so far, keep dipping into it. Do not like references to mankind as that excludes me as a woman. But nonetheless a great book. This is a large heavy but beautiful book and I am reading it at the kitchen table a little at a time to savour.

Beautiful book, gorgeous illustrations, boring writer
The writer's generally informative, but I find him heavy and dull. I only use this book as a last resort.

Wonderful!
I bought this book as a present, and it was very well received! It's a huge book, and beautiful from start to finish. The quality is incredible, with great paper, and the illustrations are gorgeous. It also covers a lot more than just trees. No regrets at all, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in agriculture, nature or art!

Excellently produced masterpiece
Beautiful book and very well produced. A worthy successor to the original work that inspired this volume. If you are interested in trees as I am then this is an essential and wonderful addition to your bookshelf. Books like this prove the value of printed material as an e-edition could never do it justice.
