Trees of Eastern North America (Princeton Field Guides)

I'm mad, do you know why?...
I'm mad because Amazon won't let me give 10 stars!I LOVE this book!!! I have learned so much from it it's not funny, you can just put on some music, chill, and flip through the pages and learn about trees.IMPORTANT ADVICE: Go on the site BONAP and look up their county maps (the button will be in the upper left of the home page), than look for the genus of trees you want to find in your specific area and it will show you a county map for each species in the US (it's US only) and you can see if that plant is in your county or not. I did this with Quercus (Oaks), and compared it to confirm, made a list, and started by learning the binomial name of those Quercus species in my county and than learning about them. (SEE PICTURE for where this book covers, it's EASTERN US and Canada). Learn the most common trees in your local area and start from there.

This is the book you want
I own a half dozen Tree Identification books,.. Audubon Society,.. all the usual suspects,.. but none of them,.. or even all of them combined,.. are as complete, thorough and useful as Trees of Eastern North America. I was planning to restore a denuded parcel of land to its former natural beauty and this book became the ‘Go To’ for information on the type habitat and native range required in order for the trees to flourish. The project is a great success and I really appreciate the exhaustive labor the writers put into it. Thank you very much.

Fabulous and Indispensable!
Identifying trees is a major part of being a master gardener. I have used many field guides and online resources for Eastern trees but this one is absolutely the best. Species are easy to find and cross-referenced by scientific and common names grouped by Family. The illustrations are all color and truly outstanding. On any one page there is the leaf (with underside), branch, bark, flower and fruit. Descriptions are concise, informative and clear. This work is a major public service contribution and all of the collaborators are to be strongly congratulated---a tour de force and standard equipment for ANYONE seeking knowledge of Eastern forests.

Excellent Field Guide
I have a few tree guides, and this one is the one I use the most. To begin, it is nice that it includes tree only in the east (and trees planted in the east) - other guides are a little too expansive for a beginner like me. Beautiful illustrations, well organized, and easy to navigate. I especially like the quick-find guide in the beginning with different leaf and twig types. I wish they had included one for flower types as well. The book has a durable water resistant binding, which is great.

Wonderful!
It's a wonderful book! Some people didn't like that it had drawing instead of pictures but I liked it. Using drawings they really bring out the difference when comparing similar trees. I also really love how they compare and show the differences between close species.

not for field identification
large book and i'm sure its well documented however, if you are in need of a reference book to identify unk trees in the wild, this is not the book to use. ALL pictures of each species in the book are "artist" drawn and not actual photographs. This is a good coffee table book but not for use as a ID guide.

Too big for a Field Guide
I found the book difficult to use. It's too big & heavy to carry on a walk.It covers so many species that it difficult to find what I need.I should have purchased a book that covered only my region. The illustrations and descriptions are good, "similar species" is a nice feature.

Best for Reference
Best reference book I have seen but a bit bulky and heavy as a pocket guide....
