Works great; cheap but good enough
I washed it once and am about to again. Not made to withstand multiple washings so am unsure if the backing will peel, but the front looks worn and has little threads like what happens to sweaters or towels. But it works fine. Pay more on a nicer one if you want pretty, but if you just want some protection then this works. My sick cat has diarrheaed and dripped pee on it; I placed plastic beneath, used a spot-carpet cleaner, then moved the stair runner out of the way to clean the rug beneath. Nothing visible went through but it was visible on the underside of the stair runner; for not having a water roof backing, the fact that the yuckies didn't soak right through into the carpet was great. Would buy again unless I wanted something nicer to look at

mostly useless for the reason it's sold.
If you plan to use this on a flat floor to protect a heavily used walking path, DON'T, because it does not stay put. As you walk it will tend to bunch up a bit and move around on the carpet. Since it does that on flat carpet, I DEFINATELY would not trust it on a carpeted stare case because if it moves enough, it could cause a trip and fall that could be disastrous. Enough said.

Very good carpet protection
After recently replacing the carpet on our basement stairs, I wanted to preserve the new look for a while. I bought this protector to try out. I am happy using it. I wanted to minimize the appearance of a dirt path on the steps and this does the trick. Yes, this is thin, foam backed material but there is a slight stretch and it is durable. It's been perfect for our carpeted stairs to the daylight basement where there is heavy traffic in our 2-person household. You'll notice it grabs up a bit of debris from your "up/down" - but think about it: if it were not on this protector it would be in the carpet . In the past, I have cleaned it up by shaking it out and vacuuming but recently I just washed it as the instructions say: On "Delicate" warm or cold water; tumbled dry on "Low", till dry and voila - like new. I'm not sure how many washings it can handle with time. For right now, the protector is minimizing the appearance of a carpet crush path. And it IS a ONE person job pulling up AND laying back down; I've tried it both ways and it is best for one person. Roll up the protector to take off and once laundered, roll it up before applying again. That way you just unroll it into place from top step - down a step at a time to place - to bottom, easy-peasy.

Only Decent Looking Product For Carpeted Stairs
It has a look and feel similar to a synthetic chamois (the kind used to dry off your washed car). The beige color has a slight pink / peach cast. It was rather easy to fit properly on my stairs but pricy for what it is - rather thin and does not look like carpet, as you see online in the picture. However, I can appreciate why it is thin - if it were thicker like carpeting, you would not be able to fold it down over each step, and it would be too heavy to put in a washing machine. With that being said, there was no information on what washing machine cycle to use or if this can be placed in a dryer. Needs adjusted slightly once or twice a day to keep it in place because it tends to shift. So, this may not be good for households with children running up and down carpeted stairs because it would constantly be shifting and may become frustrating to keep it neatly in place. However, there is virtually no other product out there to protect "carpeted" stairs. Plastic is dangerous and the pointed knubs on the bottom of plastic runners will destroy carpet. Bottomline - better than the alternative of seeing a dirty, ugly carpeting between each steam cleaning.

A bit pricey but it works
It does serve its purpose, but it’s a bit expensive for a long piece of felt. It doesn’t stay put and moves easily. I thought it would have been thicker and more substantial

These hold in place on the carpet with no tacks needed and holds up really well
I was skeptical if this would hold in place whn I bought it a year ago, however the type of two sided material they use allows the backside to almost work like velcro to your carpet to hold it in place for weeks. I am up and down the stairs to our basment alot because my workshop is down there, so a lot of trips. You do have to roll it up and lay it back in place after awhile, however you have to do this anyways to shake it out to clean it.Easy to put in place and really protects the carpet from wear. The carpet looks brand new. We remove it when we have guests over and then lay it back down in place, which takes me 2 - 3 minutes for the entires satis and landing.

Flimsy and IMO not appropriate for wood floor
In a sentence, this product is flimsy, hard to work with, and not appropriate for use on hardwood; it may be fine for use on carpet, but I'm not going to bother to find out. The material is basically a thin, cheap, stretchy terry-cloth towel material, backed with light foam, ostensibly to make it non-slip. On wood stairs, it is impossible to make it lie flat and straight, and not curve and curl in at the edges, because it's so stretchy; and if you don't stretch it, it slips underfoot and bunches up, making it a trip/slip hazard on smooth surfaces. It would be safer to use actual cotton towels, which at least don't stretch. I had been looking, and hoping when I bought this, for a low-profile carpet runner, made out of a natural fabric and with some sort of backing to give it stability, that could be cut to fit a set of narrow wood stairs to prevent slips. This is not it.
